Yes, your majesty, it’s electric: Britain’s Rolls-Royce Launches $420,000 EV

Rolls-Royce, the legendary British maker of some of the world’s most expensive cars, has launched an EV model, the Spectre, which it describes as “the world’s first ultra-luxury electric super coupe.”

But is it a wise move? It does so as EV sales worldwide have struggled except in China.

As it introduced the new product, the company made an audacious claim: “Spectre positions Rolls-Royce’s entrance into the electric world as a stamp of leadership — and the beginning of an era that will see the entire model portfolio electrified by 2030.” Meanwhile, every major car manufacturer, other than Tesla, has moved back the timing of its EV releases. The exception is the myriad EV companies in China, which have very modest sales outside their home country.

“Rolls-Royce’s first effort might just be the greatest EV on the planet,” The Verge commented, “but it comes at a cost,” with the Spectre priced at $420,000. The first Rolls was made in 1904.

An obvious drawback is its limited range on a single charge. At 266 miles, it compares poorly with many other EVs.

But Rolls-Royce’s exclusivity may be its savior here. With its luxury — and its price — only a handful of people are targets for sales. At that level, such EVs may have a demand which has faltered with much less expensive models.
