America’s Richest Neighborhood Threatened By Hurricanes

There are several ways to determine which are the wealthiest neighborhoods in America. One is based on Zip Codes and the value of houses within them.

Recently, PropertyShark reviewed residential transactions by Zip Code from January 1 to September 30. The data included condo, co-op, and single- and two-family home sales, which were used to determine the richest neighborhoods in the country.

Several neighborhoods have median home sales prices over $5 million. The figure for Zip 33109 in Florida was $5,750,000. The area is known as Fisher’s Island.

Miami Danger

Fisher’s Island is among the small barrier islands around Miami. Of the 109 homes on the island, weather disaster research company First State puts the odds of flooding over the next 30 years at 98%.

Recent hurricanes have proven that flood maps are no longer helpful in measuring hurricane damage. Parts of western North Carolina were not on flood maps, and many homes in these areas were destroyed.

As hurricanes become more frequent and ferocious, the odds of a catastrophe similar to that in St. Petersburg brought on by Hurricane Milton are more likely along the Atlantic and Gulf Coast of Florida.

The risk for Fisher’s Island has risen exponentially.
