Deep Freeze Threatens Southern Economy

What is being called Winter Storm Enzo is likely to bring extremely low temperatures and snow to part of the country which usually have a temperate winter. The cold threatens crops and utilities and could disrupt several industries.

Cold caused by a drop in the Polar Vortex could bring snow to New Orleans, Houston, and the Florida Panhandle. “This will result in temperatures 30-40 degrees below normal for tens of millions across the North American continent Sunday through Wednesday,” the site Severe Weather reported. 

Parts of the economy likely to be affected are the orange crop of Florida, which will already be the smallest since 1930 and other citrus fruit grown in the state.

Texas Storm Of 2023

Another possible and large challenge will be utilities which are not built to handle extremely cold and stormy weather. The best example of this was the North American ice storm that hit Texas in early February 2023. Power outages hit over 500,000 people. The estimated damage from the storm totaled $89 billion.
