Fires Force Evacuations Near New York City
The Jennings Creek Fire has forced authorities to begin evacuations in Warwick, NY, north of New York City. Several hundred people have been asked to leave home.

Dozens of fires are burning from New Jersey to eastern Massachusetts near the Atlantic Ocean, and forecasters expect the number to grow. After over five weeks of drought, no rain is expected for several more days. Unless this rain comes in downpours, it may have little effect if the days after are dry again.
The U.S. Drought Monitor shows drought from South Carolina to Maine. In early September, there was none in the Northeast. This shows how quickly a few weeks without rain can cause dangerous drought conditions, particularly if they are married and have high winds.

The northeast fires are starting to look like the wildfires in California. Although they are not as large as the largest ones in the West, they have similar characteristics. The northeast fires have caused smoke that has spread hundreds of miles from the fires themselves. They have started to destroy human property. They have become, in some areas, hard to contain. Finally, they will be worse because of weeks with no rain.
