Huge Floods In Houston Cause Massive Financial Damage

Flood levels only matched by those from the largest hurricanes have destroyed parts of Houston. The economy has been disrupted, and the infrastructure damage will likely spread into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Nine inches of rain fell in a period of a few hours.

“A wide region was swamped from Houston to rural East Texas, where game wardens rode airboats through waist-high waters rescuing both people and pets who did not evacuate in time. One crew brought a family and three dogs aboard as rising waters surrounded their cars and home,” according to the AP. 

Tropical Storm Allison and Hurricane Ike caused over $5 billion in damage, but Hurricane Harvey’s figure was much higher–at $125 billion. 

The Texas flooding is another example of violent storms that appear suddenly or during parts of the year when they rarely happen. Recent storms n Brazil and Dubai are other examples.
