Reno Has Almost No Winter
Climate Central examined temperatures in 2004 across cities. Between 1970 and 2023, the first freezing day came later on the calendar in over 90% of these cases when the two periods were measured.
The city with the greatest difference was Reno, where the first freeze came 41 days later in 2023 than in 1970. Our analysis of weather service data shows that there are only two months when the average low temperature is below freezing. These are January (30 degrees) and February (31).Â
Based on the two sets of data and the Climate Central definition, Reno has almost no wonder at all
Longer Summers
Reno also sits in the line of cities that range from southern Arizona, up through Las Vegas. In the summer, temperatures can reach over 110 degrees F. On many summer days, the temperature is above 100 degrees.Â
Other cities on the list include Santa Monica, where it is often unusually hot through much of the year.
One of the comments about climate change in the US is that summer is getting “longer,” as measured by the number of hot days each year. As it turns out, there is also a shorter winter
