US May Have No Hurricanes This Year

Huge hurricanes that move across the mid-Atlantic after passing through the Caribbean or the South Atlantic drag warm surface water with them as they move back east into the open ocean. This is described as the use of the heat and moisture from the warm surface water as their fuel.

Melissa is not only a category 5 storm, but also hundreds of miles wide. It is also aimed East after it makes landfall in Cuba. This will cool the Atlantic waters behind it, perhaps for weeks. The warm water collected by Melissa will dissipate over the course of days, far from the US coast.

Moving Out To Sea

This phenomenon has helped shield the East Coast from high winds and storm surges, even from hurricanes far away from the coast, but powerful enough to potentially affect US weather.

There is one month left in hurricane season. It has become increasingly unlikely that the US will take a direct hit from a hurricane. The chance of landfall by a Category 4 or 5 storm is extremely low.

There will be a temptation to say that future hurricane seasons will be safer. Forecasts issued by experts just before hurricane season will unnecessarily create alarms.

People forget how ferocious Hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton were just one hurricane season ago.
