Gas Above $5.20 In San Francisco Lifts EV Sales
EV adoption in California is almost beyond belief. About 25% of all EVs sold in the US are sold in America’s largest state by population. However, population is not the only factor. Gas prices in California are the highest in the nation. Today, they are over $5.00 statewide for the average gallon of regular. In San Francisco, the number is $5.20.

California, with a population of 39 million, is home to about 11% of America’s residents, which means the population is part of the EV sales by state calculations. One advantage to EV drivers is that 31% of the public chargers in the US are located in the state. A significant reason people do not buy EVs is the lack of charging stations.
Oil Refineries
California’s refinery capacity is among the gas price issues. One of the ten largest refineries in the US is in California, and nine are in the Gulf, in either Louisiana or Texas. Transportation costs of gas to California are part of the gas price issue.
Although not specifically to drive EV sales, California has one measure that will likely increase them. The gas tax in California is $.779, the highest in America. By contrast, the figure in Louisiana is $.209.
If the EV business is to become more successful after a slowdown in sales, California will be among the keys to that success.
