More Homes Washed Away by Storms

Homes have fallen into the water due to beach erosion caused by storms. Recent examples of this occurred in North Carolina and California. New research from Oregon State University suggests that this trend is likely to worsen.
In a series of simulations, homes were constructed and then subjected to storm surges. The homes were models, and the researchers hit them with rising water and surges. One house was put at ground level, and others were put on stilts. “By the end of the experiment, the unelevated house was flooded, missing windows and its entire back wall.” The simulation was based on the effects of Hurricane Ian when it made landfall in the southern part of Florida.
Better Construction In The Future
Due to the magnitude of the destruction in the models, the researcher stated that the experiment should have been conducted decades ago. This would have facilitated the construction of houses and enabled better planning for their locations.
The study concludes that, in the future, “a number of communities will benefit.
