Wildfires Become 365 Day A Year Danger

A new study shows that wildfire season is no longer restricted to the summer. It may begin two months earlier than in the past, and last two months after Labor Day. A look at when some major fires have occurred this year show that the engine calendar years should be included.

A new study in the journal Scientific Advances titled “Anthropogenic warming drives earlier wildfire season onset in California,” may only cover one part of the world, but the critical conclusions goes beyond that.

The reason for a longer future season has to do with global warming which causes drought. The other factor is that many more wildfires are started by humans. Drought has become a permanent part of the environment in the West. It has also spread to the East and is present in other countries.

Temperatures Keep Rising

In summary, the study’s authors report that climate change is triggering worse wildfires in California and  starting them earlier in the year, This trend will probably keep going if temperatures keep rising

Greece has not turned out to be much different despite higher wildfire risk during warming weather. The International Association of Woodland Fire reports, “Despite the efforts of the Greek government and the implementation of a forest fire prevention program called Anti-NERO in preparation of the forest fire season, the forest fire suppression mechanism proved to be insufficient under difficult conditions.”

There is dry weather throughout much of the year in the Balkans, Ukraine, Southern Russia, Cyprus, and Malta. The effects of climate change in these places is not unlike that in the US.

This lengthened wildfire season means that firefighting resources are also necessary across all 12 months.
