China’s Impressive $10,000 EV

The US has erected tariffs to keep Chinese cars out of America. According to the administration, one reason is that the Chinese government partially underwrites China’s EV production and R&D. Another is that some Chinese EVs are priced well below $20,000. There is a theory that to restart EV sales in the US will require an EV priced below $25,000. If inexpensive Chinese EVs become available in America during the next two or three years, it will cripple Ford and GM.

Chinese car companies sell EVs at prices well below $20,000. The best example is a model built by BYD, China’s largest EV company. The “SeagulL’ is priced at $10,000.

InsideEVs tested a “Seagull” that would sell for $11,500 in China. “Seeking to figure out how the heck Chinese OEMs do it, Detroit-area Automotive benchmarking company Caresoft imported an $11,500 BYD Seagull for analysis. With it, automotive journalist veteran John McElroy and Terry Woychowski, the president of Caresoft, are left significantly impressed. This doesn’t come across as cheap,” Woychowski said.

Other independent tests have shown that inexpensive Chinese EVs meet high-quality benchmarks and have features generally found on much more expensive cars.

It is only a matter of time before Chinese EVs can be purchased in America. Ford and GM must decide whether their models will be priced similarly to compete.
