Milwaukee Is The Worst City To Own EV

EV sales have slowed due to a perceived lack of charging stations. Many EVs have ranges of 300 miles or less. Not every EV owner has a charging station at home, so the availability of public chargers can be important.

In many large cities in California, the lack of charging stations is a myth. According to iSeeCars, there is one for every 412 San Francis residents, the country’s highest. In San Diego, at 670, finding a charging station is also easy. At the far end of the spectrum, there is only one per 4,230 residents in Milwaukee–the worst ratio in the country.

iSeeCars looked at charger locations across the US. It found that the national average is one EV charger for every 1,848 U.S. residents. And its experts agreed with the conventional wisdom about EV adoption. “Electric vehicle charging infrastructure remains a limiting factor in the transition from internal combustion engines to electrified vehicles.”

The availability of charging stations is getting better. iSeeCars experts wrote, “America’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure grew by 23.9 percent over the past 12 months, with the total number of Level 2 (240V) and Level 3/Fast Chargers (480V+) rising from 146,337 to 181,270.”

Major metros on the two coasts have enough chargers today, so availability is not likely to be a barrier to EV ownership as far as most potential buyers are concerned. In cities like Milwaukee, primarily in the Midwest and part of the South, the charging station challenge will remain difficult for several years, even if buildouts accelerate.
