Another problem with climate: Changes cause rat problems.
Augrabiesvalle is next to a waterfall on the Orange River, which is the largest river in South Africa. It is also in a national park that covers almost 500 square miles. The park is in what is known as a “semi-arid” region. Augrabiesvalle gets very little rain. What rain it gets falls almost exclusively from January to March. However, according to data from the park service, “Occasional thunderstorms occur from October to April.”
The temperature has large fluctuations across the year. This ranges from 40 degrees F in June and July to 100 degrees F in December and January.
Three weeks ago, the temperatures in the region were the hottest on record since the mid-1800s. In November, high temperatures broke records in several South African cities. Francois Engelbrecht, professor of climatology and director of the Global Change Institute at Wits University, commented to the Daily Maverick, “What we are looking at this year is the combined effects of ongoing global warming, with a strong El Niño event, and that has led to all these temperature records being broken across the world.” Wits University is a research college located in Johannesburg.
Based on temperature patterns based on the calendar, those in Augrabiesvalle could still climb.
