Houston In Trouble–Climate Crisis AM Edition 4/1/24

A new, sophisticated online tool to track and predict climate change has just been released. The Copernicus Climate Change Service allows users to look at temperatures worldwide. Part of the service, called the Atlas, allows users to look at forecast temperatures for the future. “The Atlas facilitates global and regional in-depth assessment of past trends and future changes in key variables and (extreme) indices for different periods across emission scenarios or for different policy-relevant global warming levels (e.g. 1.5°, 2°, 3° and 4°).” Climatecrisis247 views tools like these are useful tools for people who want to see the possible climate future for the areas where they live. It is highly questionable that this will affect the behavior of individuals or businesses since little else has.

Flood Risk –Over Three Million Homes?

Nuclear Power –American Fear

Climate change has begun to batter part of the world’s bird population, particularly migratory birds. According to a study titled “Decoupling of bird migration from the changing phenology of spring green-up.” The authors wrote, “…changing green-up strongly influenced phenological mismatches between the timing of bird migration and the timing of green-up, highlighting changing vegetation phenology as a potential growing threat of climate change for migratory animals.” In other words, birds that migrate long distances may arrive in places where they feed during specific times of the year, only to find that the vegetation they feed on is more sparse than usual. Climatecrisis247 believes this is one in a very long list of climate changes that affect the future survivability of many species.

China EV Waitlist

The demand for a new China EV is so great that it has created a long waitlist. According to Reuters, the SU7 electric sedan, built by China smartphone company Xiaomi, has a waitlist of over two months. There were almost 90,000 preorders 24 hours after the car was available—the SU7 electric sedan base model costs just under $30,000. Climatecrisis247 has two observations about the launch. The first is that Xiaomi, a major competitor of Apple in China, has been able to do what Apple could not. Apple abandoned its EV effort over a month ago. Additionally, there are better indications of demand than wait lists. Other EV companies, including Lucid and Tesla, have announced long waitlists in the past, but only to see those largely disappear when the vehicles become available. It will take several months to see what the actual demand for the SU7 is.

Houston Dangers

A new study shows that Houston is the riskiest place to own a home based on the effects of climate change. This is in turn based on “insurance-related factors,” including natural disasters like fire and flood. Climatecrisis247 has seen a large number of these lists, most of which look at climate risk in states and cities. In general, the metrics are common, which limits their usefulness.
