America’s largest coastal cities make the most lists of metros at risk for climate disasters. These range, particularly on the Atlantic seaboard and Gulf Coast, from Houston and New Orleans to Miami and as far north as New York. Cities, mostly in the West, including Los Angeles, face wildfires.

American Fear –Nuclear Power

A new study titled “Riskiest Cities for Homeownership 2024” considers the data that most insurance companies would use. These include floods, wildfires, heat, the age of home structures, and even the locations of fire stations. The authors from Claim Guide write, “America’s sun-drenched coastal states – Florida and California – are home to 7 of the 10 riskiest cities for homeownership in 2024.” The city with the greatest risk is in neither of these states.

170 Largest Cities

Houston tops the list, with 98% of homes at risk for extreme heat and 64% at risk for flood over the next 30 years. The study looked at America’s 170 largest cities.

Houston was followed by San Bernardino and Glendale, which are at risk of wildfire. Next, New Orleans was high on the flood list. Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Hollywood, FL, are geographically grouped. Each has a high flood risk.

Boise, tucked away in the Mountain states, is the safest city. Interestingly, during the pandemic, it was the fastest-growing city in America.
