Category 4 And Category 5 Hurricane Count May Rise

The number of the most powerful hurricanes could rise due to a forecast of sharply rising temperatures over the next several decades. These Category 4 and Category 5 hurricanes have caused billions of dollars of damage in the US and also claimed scores of lives.

Category 5 hurricanes have maximum sustained winds of 137 MPH based on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. One description says these can leave areas uninhabitable for weeks or even months. In recent years, heavy storms have increased insurance rates in several areas, including Florida, where some people can no longer afford home insurance.

According to the NOAA “Atlantic hurricanes and climate”, Based on a survey of existing studies, with regards to future North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico tropical storm and hurricane activity, a 2˚C (4˚F) global warming scenario would be expected to lead to the following: Numbers of Atlantic hurricanes reaching Category 4 or 5 intensity are projected to increase about 10% but with large uncertainty and with some studies projecting a decrease.” The forecast for storms this powerful also include higher winds and more flooding.

Although it seemed impossible just years ago, these storms could make some homes along the Atlantic and GUlf unaffordable due to high insurance costs.
