Miami Could Be Saved By Weather AI

Of all the main cities in America, Miami is the most vulnerable to a climate catastrophe. There are forecasts that 60% of Miami will be underwater in 30 years. Part of it is below sea level. Melting at the poles means rising seas. Hurricanes mean more storm surges. Traditional weather forecasting may not be adequate to help Miami weather its problems. As Microsoft has demonstrated, AI-based forecasts can be helpful.

Microsoft Aurora AI has been designed to create forecasts that are significantly better than those generated by current technology. It may allow the very long-term forecasts that Miami needs to have days or weeks of warning about the exact paths of hurricanes.

Tech Crunch reports, “Aurora, which has been trained on more than a million hours of data from satellites, radar and weather stations, simulations, and forecasts, can be fine-tuned with additional data to make predictions for particular weather events.” Like most AI models, it feeds itself with new data second by second, making forecasts better and better, at least on paper. Google and Nvidia have similar products.

In the last two decades, Miami has experienced direct hits from several hurricanes, including Andrew, Wilma, Michael, and Donna. It has suffered major damage from storms that hit nearby.

AI-based weather forecasts will benefit most of the U.S. No location will benefit more than Miami
