Rising Seas Make Island Disappear

According to NASA, some islands in the Pacific have started disappearing, and that process will not reverse. The research adds that even if the climate did not worsen, these islands would be too late.

In its description of the problem, Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer, who directs ocean physics programs for NASA’s Earth Science Division, says, “Sea level will continue to rise for centuries, causing more frequent flooding.” He added that seawater has already moved so far underground that it has pushed out fresh water. This causes problems with both drops and drinking water.

Officials added that not all land areas along the oceans will flood at the same rate. There is some evidence that ocean levels are rising faster in the Pacific than in other oceans. However, flooding has risen rapidly as far away as Queens in New York City. This problem has also been blamed on climate change.
