The Price Of Your Coffee Is About To Soar Again

The price of coffee has risen about 50% since last year. The exact cost depends on whether the beans are Arabica or robusta. Nevertheless, the price of ingredients for homebrewers or coffee shop visits makes breakfast more expensive. It also adds to US inflation.

Most coffee beans are grown in Vietnam and Brazil. New weather patterns will ruin some of the land where they are grown. Coffee Watch recently highlighted the extent of the problem, which is primarily due to rain.

A new study from the firm, titled “Brazil coffee mapping shows coffee deforestation the size of Honduras; New report warns of rainfall loss and market risks,” forecasts that as much as two-thirds of Brazil’s Arabica area is at risk by 2050. That would drop worldwide supply by an extraordinary amount.

Orange Prices Hit As Well

The study also provided new maps showing the extent of forest loss from coffee farming. The drying trends in the area affect both forests and coffee. Etelle Higonnet, Director of Coffee Watch, made the point that “Brazil needs to reverse course urgently because this deforestation isn’t just a carbon and biodiversity disaster – it’s also killing rains and leading to crop failures. Rains are failing where coffee expands at the expense of forests. As a result, climate shocks are hitting wallets. Brazil’s coffee future is on the line.”

Coffee is not the only major crop that affects the cost of living in the US. Recently, the other is cacao, which mostly comes from Western Africa. And in the U.S., the orange crop in Florida hit its lowest level since 1933 due to hurricanes.

The environment is eating away at America’s meal staples, and, unless global warming is brought under control, that will continue.
