Hurricane Milton Upgraded To Category 5. ‘You’re Going to Die,’ Mayor Warns
In an alarmingly short period of time, Hurricane Milton intensified from a Category 1 storm as of Sunday night to a Category 5 by Monday afternoon. While the storm has since calmed to a Category 4, Milton is currently forecast to be one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever.

With more than half of the state under hurricane watch, flood warning, or storm surge warning, Florida officials are urging residents to evacuate. “You’re going to die,” Tampa mayor Jane Castor warned residents choosing to ignore evacuation orders in one dire CNN soundbite. Situated in Tampa Bay directly in the storm’s current projected track, Tampa is one of the largest cities in the path of Hurricane Milton. As of Tuesday morning, there are nine counties in Florida under mandatory evacuation orders.
Hurricane Milton is the 13th named storm in what is quickly becoming one of the busiest Atlantic hurricane seasons in recent history. And as battered communities throughout the Southeast begin cleanup efforts from Helene, and central Florida braces for Milton, meteorologists are keeping a close eye on Leslie, a tropical storm forming in the Atlantic Basin.
