EV School Plans Disappear

School buses carry 20 million students a day. Over nine out of ten run on diesel, which is near the top of America’s most environmentally dangerous fuels. Attempts to convert these fleets have almost completely failed. That trend does not look likely to turn around. As is the case with EVs, changing from fossil fuels has few incentives.

Almost $5 billion was set aside for school bus EV conversions meant to be spent in 2022 and 2023. The project was known as the Clean School Bus program. The Trump Administration has not distributed the last $2.7 billion. Based on the administration’s approach to clean energy, the money may never be spent.

Axios described how badly the EV school bus initiative has been crippled. “That momentum died in 2025, with 13,931 committed e-buses, only 73 more than in 2024.”

Tax Credits Cut

Although the comparison is next exact, the move is a bit like the death of the $7,500 tax credit for the purchase of some EVs. After this expires on September 30, EV sales are expected to plunge. As consumers continue to worry about public charging stations, charging times, range, and tire wear, it is hard to find a reason why EV sales will begin a sharp rise again

And, the EV bus is part of a much wider clean energy movement that is being systematically wiped out. This includes an attack on off shore wind power, and a loss of tax credits for the initiation of residential solar energy.

As is the case with many clean energy projects, incentives are essential. Inertia is a primary reason people do not want to change energy sources. Without credits, that is hard to overcome.
