Extreme Heat Makes People Older

People who live in areas where there are extremely high temperatures for extended temperatures age faster than people who live elsewhere. In Nature Climate News, a paper titled “Long-term impacts of heatwaves on accelerated aging.” described the process.

Scientists in Taiwan looked at the aging pattern of 24,922 people from 2009 to 2022. They were evaluated for their physical cognition due to heatwaves. The measure was against both standard temperatures and absolute temperatures. Absolute means temperatures which are always considered very high. The difference is ultimately measured by biological age and chronological age.

For every significant exposure to heatwave exposure. People aged between 8 and 11 days. The yardstick was what scientists call biological age acceleration (BAA).

Exposure To Heatwaves

It is a part of the world where people receive more regular exposure to heatwaves. Additionally, some people were exposed because of the amount of time they were affected. Outdoor workers like those in construction were more likely to be faced with this problem

As is true with most of these papers, the authors suggested that there be some mitigation. This included “targeted” policies. If the past has a value in this case, it says that governments rarely take this kind of action.
