Great News For Environment As AI Electricity Goes Offline

The Trump Administration has set a deal with huge AI companies to take their server farms off the traditional grid. These energy hungry installations compete with residences and legacy businesses for a limited supply of electricity.

According to Axios, ‘President Trump said his energy “emergency” can help build power plants that directly fuel AI data centers instead of connecting to regional grids.’ Trump mentioned that one fuel operation for these was coal, which is one of the most destructive greenhouse gases.

The problem with dropping off the grid is that energy supply from green energy is still severely limited. Solar energy has grown, but not fast enough to replace fossil fuels. New regulations mean that wind energy may not emerge as a large energy supplier for decades.

Americans are wary about old nuclear power plants. The 1979 meltdown of Three Mile Island remains the low point of nuclear energy adaptation.

Small Nuclear Reactors

There is a new generation of small modular reactors (SMR). The IAEA writes, “Prefabricated units of SMRs can be manufactured and then shipped and installed on site, making them more affordable to build than large power reactors, which are often custom designed for a particular location, sometimes leading to construction delays.’ These are largely untested and will take years of work before they can be adopted.

New grids, built just of AI server farms do not solve the green energy problem. It may may the problem worse.
