Can Tesla Batteries Power California?

PG&E, a huge electric utility in California, shut off power to a number of homes from 7 PM to 9 PM. Tesla was the utility’s partner. A total of homes were used. Instead of pulling power from the local grid, it tapped much more of the state. Their theory was based on the fact that, at all given time, there may be spare electricity, according to Semafor.

Tesla has both home chargers and a solar energy division. These sources could be part of the system.

If this can work on a larger scale in California. It could be applied across a number of challenges. That could increase AC used early in the day, data centers that use electricity at 11 PM, and periods when part of the state could be black out because of over usual demand.

The issue Semafor raises is whether this could be a partial replacement for renewables, the growth of which has slowed. This early experiment shows that might be possible.
