Tesla Could Use As Much Electricity As New York City

If Tesla can get 14 million vehicles on the road, charging them would require the same amount of electricity as New York City. NYC uses 52 TWh/year. At current EV growth rates, Tesla has a chance to get there in five to ten years.

The math is 52 billion kWh ÷ 3,600 kWh/vehicle ≈ 14.4 million vehicles.

Include China

One reason this math is worth doing is that Tesla may not represent global EV sales of 14 million vehicles. However, added with other brands, particularly those from China, the figure is attainable.

China EV sales are already 11 million units. That figure is rising about 30% a year.

There is concern about where the world will get its electricity has AI server farms grow. The concern should be about EVs as well.
