Charging Stations Jump In A Victory For EVs
Among the main reasons people do not buy EVs is that they believe there are too few charging stations. They, therefore, could be caught on the road with a low battery level, unable to charge their cars, or at least charge them quickly. EV changing stations are crowded in some areas, which means waiting. Gas-powered cars don’t have those problems.
There is strong evidence that the number of EV charging stations is exploding upward. According to the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, there are “200,000 public charging ports available nationwide.” That is ahead of the pace to reach 500,000 by 2030.
US EV sales have been close to stagnant this year. Among the reasons is a slowdown in sales of Teslas. The company still has close to 50% of the EV market. People still worry about charging time, range, tire wear, and battery levels in cold weather. It may take years to improve all of these significantly.
Gas Stations
Among the reasons the charging station count has risen is that Tesla no longer completely dominates the market. ChargePoint, Electrify America, and EVgo have built out networks. It remains a risky business, but one that has served EV owners well.
There are about 160,000 gas stations in the US. Almost all have multiple pumps. Taken together, that means that gas is easier to get than an EV charge. And filling up a gas tank can take as little as 10 minutes.
Charging stations may not be able to match gas stations, but the numbers are getting closer. Now, EV companies have to convince people they are a better alternative than cars that run on fossil fuels.
