Chinese EV Race Is AI Chip Race

The race among Chinese EV companies, at a battery and AI level, may be more advanced than that among major US car manufacturers. In China, it is a chip race, a competition for advances in artificial intelligence. While this may be true in the US, Tesla is likely the only major competitor.

Self-Driving In the US

In every case, the final goal is a fully self-driving car, and none are there. Tesla, Waymo, and GM’s Cruise claim to have made progress, but this has been damaged by dangerous accidents. Even a fully functioning self-driving vehicle must overcome public skepticism about safety.

If AI functions are not combined with preexisting ground-level maps of reads, the problem of self-driving cars becomes more difficult. In China, much of this involves partnerships with companies that already have these maps. In the US, Tesla has gathered this through millions of miles driven by its vehicles with several cameras.

In House Solutions

CNBC points out the difference of approach between the two countries “But with increasing focus on driver-assist tech, which relies more on artificial intelligence — a segment at the center of U.S.-China tech competition — Chinese automakers are turning to in-house tech.”

It is too early to say which one will work better.
