Tesla California Market Share Plumments

Thirdty-five percent of all EVs in the US are in California, although it has only 12% of the national population. There are several guesses about the reason for this. Among them is that the state has the highest gas price in the nation by far. To win the American EV market share race, a company has to win in California.
The Califonia Car Dealers Association released its first-quarter sales data. Among the comparisons are sales in the first quarter of last year compared to the quarter that just ended. Tesla had a 55.9% market share last year, which dropped to 43.9% this year.
Ford’s Struggles
Tesla’s market share is still well above that of any other EV manufacturer. Although almost all legacy gas car companies are trying to muscle into the EV market, none have double-digit share numbers. BEVs have 20% of the total new car sales market.
The Tesla Model Y was the top selling vehicle at 23.314, followed by the Model 3 at 13,992.
Honda Gains
The Honda Prologue is a distant third at 4,493, followed by the Hyudai Ioniq 5 at 3,762. The top-selling American EV in California is the Mustang Mach-E at 3,601. This is a good example of how far American car companies must go.
The data also show that Tesla can remain well ahead of its competition, if it can turn around a negative impression of the brand.
