It is 106 degrees F in Wilcannia, Australia, a port on the Darling River in northwest New South Wales–west of Sidney and north of Melbourne.  It has a population of less than 1,000 people.

Another city with heat problems is Phoenix.

The area is not a stranger to high temperatures. As early as the 1930s, they rose above 122 degrees F, close to Australia’s all-time record.

The geographic areas around Wilcannia have been described as “semi-arid” and “desert”. The town’s average rainfall is only 10 inches a year. Temperatures are the highest from October through February and often exceed 100 degrees F.

The Australian government has said that a strong El Niño means much of the country will set record temperatures this year. “So we would expect 2024 to end up hotter than 2023,” Dr Simon Bradshaw from the Climate Council told Yahoo News.

Rob McLeod, policy manager at the Australian nonprofit Renew, has started naming Australia’s heatwaves to increase public awareness. He told The Guardian, “Heatwaves have killed more people in Australia than any other natural hazard.”
