Parts of Australia are engulfed by wildfires, primarily due to temperature and drought. Much of this is in Victoria, north of Melbourne. But it is even hotter elsewhere in the country.

It’s 112 degrees F in Telfer, Australia, which sits in The Great Sandy Desert almost 1,000 miles northeast of Perth. It is also home to a huge copper and silver mine operated by mining giant Newmont. Several other towns and cities nearby have temperatures of 110 degrees F today.

This heat level was rare in the past, but last January, the temperature near Telfer hit record levels. Occasionally, temperatures reached over 120 degrees F on the hottest days in December and January last year. And sweltering days above 100 degrees F can last from October through March.

Because Telfer is south of the Indian Ocean, it is also hit by cyclones in January and February. During those months, arid weather can turn into terrific rainstorms briefly. The winds from the cyclones can hit 130 MPH.

The heat can make the environment dangerous for humans. At the high end, the heat in Telfer can cause heat stroke for anyone exposed to 120 degrees F for even a short period. Heatstroke happens when the body’s core temperature hits 104 degrees F. The effect can cause damage to organs, including the brain and heart.
