The Global Commission on the Economics of Water reports that a drop in total fresh water amounts caused by climate change will threaten “half the world’s food production.” Its definition of water includes above-ground and below-ground water, soil moisture, groundwater and ice.

One effect of this shortage is that, on average, the median GDP in high-income countries could drop 8% by 2050. This, in turn, will cause “massive cascading disruptions to the global economy.” Lower-income nations face a drop of 10% to 15% in revenue, in part because their economies tend to rely significantly on agriculture.

The study’s conclusion is similar to many related climate subjects, with the problem likely to be only be solved by public policy and changes to economic and governance systems. So far, this has not worked because of a lack of efforts to follow the guidance, particularly in developed nations.

One author of the report added, “We have to think radically about how we are going to preserve the sources of fresh water, how we are going to use it far more efficiently, and how we are going to be able to have access to fresh water available to every community, including the vulnerable – in other words, how we preserve equity [between rich and poor].”

Not likely.
