EVs that Big Car Companies Have Eliminated
The market for electric vehicles is changing rapidly in the United States. Turmoil in the industry has been caused, in no small part, by the Trump administration’s September 2025 repeal of an incentive program that granted a $7,500 tax credit to eligible EV buyers. The incentive program’s looming expiration fueled a sales-volume surge, as Americans bought a record-breaking 438,400 electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2025. In the months since, EV sales have cratered, and major automakers are reevaluating their exposure in the U.S. EV market.
In Q4 2025, EV sales in the U.S. plummeted to 234,000 units, a 46% decline from the previous quarter. Now, a recent report from Cox Automotive shows that unit sales have continued to slide in 2026, falling again to 216,399 in the first three months of the year.
For automakers, sales challenges have been compounded by uncertainty surrounding production costs under Trump administration tariffs. Now, multiple automotive brands – including Acura, Honda, Kia, Ram, and Volkswagen – have scrapped plans to introduce new, previously announced EV nameplates to the U.S. market. In addition, a growing number of automakers are axing existing EV nameplates in the United States – selling off dealership inventory and discontinuing production.
Using data from Cox Automotive and other auto industry publications, Climate Crisis 247 identified the EVs that major automakers are killing. The nine EV models on this list are ranked in order of relative year-over-year sales decline, from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026, as reported by Cox Automotive. Supplemental data on base MSRP and estimated range for the EVs on this list are as reported by Car and Driver.
The companies behind the EVs on this list include European, Japanese, and American automakers. Largely due to halted production, most of these models have seen a more than 90% year-over-year decline in sales volume during the first three months of 2026.
