Ford and Tesla EV Sales Collapse

Amid surging gas prices, electric vehicle sales improved meaningfully in the second quarter of 2026. According to a recent report from Cox Automotive, Americans bought nearly a quarter of a million EVs between April and June this year, a 14.7% increase from the first quarter. Still, year-over-year comparisons show that EV unit sales have yet to return to levels reported before October 2025, when the Trump administration scrapped the $7,500 federal tax incentive for qualified EV buyers.

Second quarter sales figures show a nearly 21% decline in EV demand compared to the same period last year – and most automakers felt the pinch. Tesla, the best selling EV brand in the United States, with a more than 52% market share so far in 2026, posted a 13.1% year-over-year dip in Q2 unit sales. Ford, a legacy automaker behind the historically popular Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning EVs, reported a staggering 40.7% year-over-year sales decline in Q2.

While Ford and Tesla were not last quarter’s biggest losers in relative terms, these two companies alone accounted for nearly 40% of the domestic EV market’s year-over-year slump in unit sales. Notably, both automakers have recently announced production suspensions or discontinuations of some of their most iconic EV models, including the F-150 Lightning and the Model S. According to industry experts, the fleet cutbacks were attributable in part to sluggish consumer demand.

Using data from Cox Automotive, Climate Crisis 247 identified the Ford and Tesla EV models with the largest dip in sales. For each automaker, we ranked all EV models, including those recently discontinued, on the relative change in unit sales between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026. All sales data is from Cox Automotive and supplemental data on MSRP is from Car and Driver, an auto industry publication.
