Cloud Seeding Triggers Increase In Rainfall

China has initiated a cloud seeding project to alleviate drought-stricken areas of the country. It works. That means the process can be used globally.

According to Chinese media, “Considering that many places in China have been affected by the drought this year, this year’s ground operations have increased by about 20% compared with the same period last year, and the impact area and rainfall of operations have increased by 27% and 29% respectively compared with the same period last year.” Wang Fei said that artificial rain has played a positive role in drought mitigation, soil improvement, disaster prevention and reduction, reservoir storage, forest fire risk reduction and ecological environment protection.”

China Testing

The process is not new. It has been used since the 1940s and is currently in use worldwide, with varying levels of effectiveness. Chemicals that have been used are usually salt-based. The process has also been applied using lasers and heat.

The US government has questioned the effectiveness of the methods. The GAO wrote last year.  “But the benefits of this technology are unproven. Some states are using cloud seeding, but there is little federal involvement.” It said reports were unreliable and questioned the safety of silver iodide.

The importance of ongoing testing of the process cannot be understated. The levels of drought worldwide continue to increase in the US. Drought is a regular part of life, particularly in the southwest.
