Heat Becomes No.1 Weather Killer
Based on new research, people are killed by drought, flood, hurricane, and wildfires. However, nothing takes more lives than heat when it comes to weather-related deaths. To the best of scientists’ knowledge, this is true in the US and worldwide.
Inside Climate News reports, “At the start of this summer, more than 255 million Americans—or two-thirds of the country’s population—lived in areas experiencing life-threatening levels of extreme heat.” The breaking point for extreme health dangers is about 105 degrees F. When a person’s core temperature reaches this level, cells start to rupture and leak their content into the bloodstream. The kidneys begin to filter these. Parts of the human organ systems become overloaded and can spiral toward death.
There are early warning systems for heat disease, and they are dangerous in and of themselves. These include confusion, rapid pulse, and heat rash.
Public And Private Funds
A very large portion of the American public is protected from the effects of extreme heat by air conditioning. However, their population of people without this ranges well into the millions. Most are among Americans who are poor, and most of that group at risk lives in places where summer temperatures often top 100 degrees F. For these individuals, there are few ready solutions. Many do not have air conditioning because they cannot afford the units. Others cannot afford the units. And, some do not live inside. Those who live inside sometimes find out that it is hotter inside than outside.
Many climate-related problems lack solutions. These solutions are either too costly or logistically challenging. Private funding to handle these is usually not available. Pubic funds are also often scarce.
