Heat Deaths Hit 2,325 in 2023
According to new data from the Journal for the American Medical Association. The figure was the highest since the group started taking records. The fire was also .63 per 100,000 people up from .44 in 2022.
Phoenix Records
The numbers should not come as a surprise. Heat deaths in Phoenix alone topped 600 last year. Phoenix had 52 days when the temperature topped 110 degrees F. There were similar temperatures across much of Utah, Arizona and Texas.
110 Degrees F
Many people, particularly the poor, do not have access to air conditioning. And, in some cities, the temperature does not drop below 90 degrees at night, and people have no relief from the daytime heat.
2024 Will Be Worse
The levels of heat in the US this year have set records, which means the number is likely to go up again.
