Huge AI Weather Breakthrough Promises Better Forecasts

Axios reports, “A new generative AI weather model from Nvidia Research significantly advances the accuracy of short-range weather forecasting, helping to predict hazards from flash floods to tornado outbreaks, the company first told Axios.”

Nvidia is the world’s largest AI company and the leading AI company in the US based on market cap, which has risen above $1 trillion. Its revenue is currently almost tripling quarter over quarter over the same quarter last year. Its success has pulled the stocks of a number of AI-centric companies like Microsoft and Alphabet to near-all-time highs.

Most current advanced weather forecasting models use physics. It appears that this model will soon be completely superseded by AI. If so, it would be the largest weather forecasting breakthrough of the year.

The breakthrough raises the question of who will have access to the technology and what it will cost. The first list of customers is likely to be National Weather Services. Several companies charge six or seven figures to companies that sell proprietary weather forecasts.

Finally, there are three B to C companies like AccuWeather.

The tech will help forecast collate change over long periods and dangerous weather over shorter ones.
