Whether the U.S. or Panama own the Panama Canal, one of the largest routes for ship traffic in the world still faces horrible drought that will slow traffic through it, or shutter in completely from time to time.

Canal Runs Dry

The drought was at its worst when the level of in early 2024. However, it had had the drought challenge for several months. Its fiscal year was the driest on record. At some points, traffic was down over half the previous year’s. According to the EIA, “The Panama Canal reduced traffic due to a historic drought at Gatún Lake last year. Water levels at Gatún Lake, which supplies the water used to operate the canal’s locks, were the lowest since at least 1965..”

A dam project may add water to the canal, but that is half a decade from now.

The Future Is Now

No matter who owns or controls the canal the drought problem will recur in the future

Part of the issues of climate change is what people and countries want to own, what they can afford, and what they can afford fixing.
