The Western US has barely recovered from 110 degrees F temperature two weeks ago and faces similar weather over the 4th of July weekend. Accuweather expects severe heat to spread from Fresno to Las Vegas to Phoenix.

“Triple-digit heat starts Saturday in Fresno and those high temperatures will continue at least into next weekend,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Scott Homan. “The forecast high of 115 degrees in Fresno next Saturday would tie the all-time record high from July 8, 1905.”

The heat will carry with it high nightly temperatures in the 80s. These do not allow people without air conditioning to recover, which poses serious health hazards.

Productivity Undermined

Businesses that remain open, particularly those that employ people who work outside, will see productivity fall. According to recent research, high temperatures turn three-day construction jobs into four-day jobs.

The late June heatwave raises the issue of how hot July and August may be. Last year, Phoenix had 54 days when the temperature was over 110 degrees. That could happen again this year.
