A huge mass of cold weather and snow has hit the south hard enough that the Houston airport has already closed and there are warnings about blizzard like conditions in Louisiana.

According to Accuweather, snow is expected from Greenville to Lake Charles. The weather forecasting service points out that some towns and cities in the area do not have snow removal equipment. Houston is expected to get as much as four inches of snow.

Temperatures throughout much of the region are expected to be 15 to 25 degrees below their historic averages.

Power outages could hit areas from Corpus Christi to Wilmington. There is particular risk near Jacksonville, which is the largest city in Florida, the area around New Orleans, and southwest of Houston. Much of this will be due to the need to heat homes and businesses. “The electrical grid in the central and eastern U.S. may be stressed as hundreds of millions reach to turn up the heat,” Accuweather reported.

Great Houston Storm

The weather is a reminder of the massive power outage in Houston in February 2021. Hundreds of thousands of people lost power to their homes, and over 200 people died. The primary reason was an aging electricity grid.

Another problem the storm creates is that many of the cities and towns in the areas likely to be hit have no snow removal equipment, or budgets. Not all cities will have the funds necessary.

Additionally, the citrus corps in Florida will be endangered. Hurricanes Helene and Milton has already cut the crop yield to the lowest level since 1930.
