EV Pubic Charging Cost 110% More Than Home Electricity

One objection to purchasing an EV is the number of public charging stations. Another is range. For those who want to drive an EV over 200 miles from home, the public charging station is critical. However, public charging stations are more than twice as expensive as home charging.Â
According to Lending Tree, “In the U.S., public charging costs more than twice as much as at-home charging — 34.2 cents per kWh at public and commercial charging stations and 16.3 cents at home stations (based on residential electricity costs). That’s an additional 110.3%.”
Most Expensive In Idaho
The figure is not uniform by state. It is most expensive in Idaho (288%), Montana (2815), and other highly populated states. The distance between major cities in those states can be 200 miles. From Boise to Bozeman, the distance is 476 miles.Â
For the most part, the comparison of home charging versus public charging is much better in states that are small geographically or have dense populations. In California, the premium is just over 15%. It has by far the most EVs in the nation, even on a per-thousand basis. The chargers are heavily concentrated around the LA and San Francisco areas.Â
Least Expensive In California
Hawaii comes after California with a 32% premium, followed by Connecticut at 33%, Maryland at 36%, and New York at 42%.
Until the charging disparity issue is solved, it will add to why people shy away from EVs.
