Climate Danger —US Flood Risks
Ventersdorp is west of Johannesburg and south of the Botswana border. The average high temperature from December through February is 95 degrees, and the record high for those months is over 105 degrees F. The area gets almost no rain from May through September.
Dangerous Heat
The South African Weather Service reports that the area around Johannesburg has suffered a tremendous heat wave, which will continue for several days. SAWS forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela commented, “We encourage people to stay away from direct contact with the sun and those traveling to drink lots of water. People should limit some outdoor activities when hot and wear appropriate clothing to protect themselves.”
The situation in Ventersdorp is similar to others worldwide. Phoenix set records with over 50 days of 110 degrees F heat last summer, and February was the hottest February on record. Europe set several record highs last summer. Forecasts expect these trends to continue.
