China City Of 23 Million Hit By Huge Storm
Shanghai, a Chinese city of 23 million people, is being battered by a hurricane, and the destruction could reach billions of dollars. It is the most enormous storm that has hit the storm since 1949.
According to Reuters, “The Category 1 typhoon, packing maximum sustained wind speeds near its centre of around 144 kilometres per hour (89 miles per hour).”

City officials have called for several emergency measures. However, a storm of this size allows for little preparation. It was as if a Category 1 storm hit New York City, a reminder of Sandy, which caused $93 billion (in 2023 dollars) in damages. It took years for part of the metro area to recover. And, in some places along the New Jersey shore, homes and businesses were never rebuilt.
Shanghai is an example of how climate change has gone from affecting rural areas and third-world countries to affecting large developed nations and cities like Phoenix. This summer, Phoenix has had 100 consecutive days with temperatures over 100 degrees F, which could not have been imagined a few years ago.
Shanghai will be a reminder that climate change can affect millions of people in a single day.
