Coldest Place In The World, It’s Minus 87 Degrees
Global warming may have overtaken much of the northern hemisphere this year. Records fell across much of America and Europe. Deadly heat is still part of this year in India, Iraq, and Iran.
Antarctica has been the coldest area on earth since recorded time, and it remains so. At the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, it is minus 87 degrees.
Early Expeditions
The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is 9,000 feet above sea level, which helps it accomplish its primary goal of astrophysics experiments.
The station, built in 1956, is named for British explorer Robert F. Scott and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.
Lowest Temperatures
The low temperature at the station is usually below 90 degrees F from March through October, and there is virtually no sun from April through August.
The station is in the New Zealand time zone.
