Florida Hit By Lightning 14 Million Times

XWeather has issued its Annual Lightning Report for 2024. It claims there were 2.2 billion lighting “events” worldwide. Of those, 209 million were in the U.S.
Lighting is split into two categories. One is cloud to cloud. The other is could to ground. The median distance at which it can pinpoint an “even” is 84 meters, which its has is the length of a football field.
The measurements are based on two key metrics. The first is the total number of lighting events. The other is the “density,” which refers to events within a certain distance, typically measured in kilometers. Texas leads in events at 40 million, followed by Florida at 15 million based on total events.
Florida Tops List
Florida led in density with 91 events per kilometer last year. By this yardstick, Oklahoma is second (75), followed by Louisiana (71).
Teague, Texas, leads all cities at 735, followed by Orandlo at 414.
The report also says lightning is seasonal. Most events are from April to August. May 22 was the peak day last year, followed by March 14 and March 16.
