New York City Temperature To Drop 20 Degrees

Temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast will reach above 100 degrees F today and tomorrow. Many will break records. This is just after a similar wave hit the western states. Four days from now, New York City temperatures will be well below 80 degrees, based on Accuweather forecasts. As many as 200 million people will be spared the heat, at least for a few days.

This is another example of how quickly US temperatures change. And in the longer term, many parts of America hit record lows. The temperature in Baton Rouge dropped to 7 degrees on January 22, which was half a year ago.

Climate Central reports, “extreme, rapid temperature swings are increasing as climate change disrupts the polar jet stream.” In all likelihood, this will increase in the future.

What happens on the East Coast is not always matched in the West. Some parts of the nation appear trapped in long cycles of extremely high temperatures. It will be close to 110 degrees on many days over the next ten. But while temperatures in Phoenix have been among the highest in the nation based on decades of data, the average summer temperature was 96 degrees last year. The average from 1896 to 2025 was 90 degrees.

In the case of New York City, the drop of 20 degrees next week is something of an anomaly. As the temperatures of the water in the North Atlantic has risen, so has the temperature of the city, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

There are side effects from the rising fluctuations in temperatures across much of the US. Early, warm spring affected pollen (allergies) and the presence of species, including deer ticks. Plunging temperatures in late fall cause spikes in oil as the demand for home heating jumps. These jumps may be temporary, but are expensive nevertheless.

So, the 20 degree drop in temperatures in New York City may be rare, temperature swings across the rest of the country, particularly across periods longer than a week have become more and more common.
