Hope For The Future Of Green Energy, As Tesla Sales Surge

Tesla’s second quarter sales topped almost every estimate. It produced over 450,00 vehicles and delivered over 480,000. Add this to triple-digit sales increases in Europe and the UK in May. In fact, Europe’s sales were the primary driver of Tesla’s second-quarter growth.

Because of Tesla’s position in global EV sales, this offers some hope for growing EV adoption, which has plateaued or declined in most places worldwide, except in China, the largest EV market. For Tesla, the US is less a part of the trend. According to The New York Times, “Tesla sales in the European Union rose 77 percent in the first five months of 2026 to 89,000 cars, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. That helped offset a decline in the United States, where lawmakers eliminated tax breaks last year, effectively raising the cost of electric models by up to $7,500.” Nevertheless, the free fall in America appears to have ended.

The hope for an increase in US EV sales actually came from smaller EV company Rivian. It raised its forecast sales for the year from 63,000 to 65,000 to 70,000.

EV adoption rates need not grow in every country n to show that fossil-fuel car sales have begun to rebound. It was happening more slowly than expected in the US five years ago with help from the Biden Administration. The huge shift from fossil-fuel cars to EVs in China began over three years ago. There are close to 100 EV companies in China. The largest EV company there is BYD. It has expanded across Southeast Asia, South America, Europe, and Canada. They are kept out of the US by tariffs.

Tesla’s sales have started to pull away from a drop caused in part by the conservative politics of founder Elon Musk. Tesla’s sales in Europe were particularly damaged by this last year, with double-digit declines.

Tesla’s EV sales, although uneven geographically, are part of an important trend. More and more often, fossil fuel cars are no longer the backbone of the industry’s future.
