‘I have lost everything’: The toll of global warming spreads, with Africa Hard-Hit

The Guardian, which does a better job than any media outlet covering the climate crisis, recently wrote about a southern Africa farmer whose life was ruined by the drought that has hammered that region, an area that includes parts of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi and Namibia. “I have lost everything,” he told the paper.

And in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola and Mozambique, much of the economic activity in those nations has been destroyed, leading to a collapse in an already-low GDP per capita.

This region has over 100 million residents, some of whom are suffering from malnutrition to the point that tens of thousands will die. Meanwhile, long-range weather forecasts show that the situation will not improve. There is little or no chance there can be a climate-driven migration because there is no place for tens of millions of people to go.

Worldwide problem
The problems are a microcosm of problems around much of the world. Another example is people who live in large cities in India, in particular the capital city, New Delhi. which has more than 20 million residents. Apart from regualarly suffering from heat above 100 degrees F, the air pollution there is often the worst in the world. Again, there is no place for them to go, and, over time, this will affect the rapidly growing Indian economy.

Additionally, the funds that should come from the world’s richest nations to help improve climate-related challenges have not come or are slow to appear.
